Change Email Password

SPAM

You never know when your email address will be targeted by hackers. But, when it happens, you'll probably hear about it rather quickly. So, what do you do when 500 people receive an email from you that you never sent?

Change your email password

Yes, that is the best way to combat an email hacker. Change your password. That will keep the hacker from accessing your email address and using it to spread viruses and malware. Here is how you change your password from mail.google.com.

When you are logged into your email, click on what looks like a tick-tack-toe grid on the top right of the screen. Find "My Account" in that drop down menu. Under the "Sign-in & Security" section click on "Signing in to Google." Then click "Password." You'll have to use your current password to continue and then it will ask you for a new password.

It happened once, doesn't that mean it could happen again?

Yes, it could. Changing your password doesn't keep your email address from being hacked again, it just keeps the current hacker from using it.

Is there a way to keep my email address from being hacked?

Yes. Google and other companies that have log in features, have a setting called "Two-Step Verification." Two-Step Verification uses a random code that is sent to your phone via a text, or using the Google Authenticator app for iPhone or Android. The Google Authenticator app automatically cycles through random codes and every code times out after 30 seconds, so only the code that appears in Google Authenticator will work. Once a code times out, it will not work. To access this feature: when you are logged into your email, click on what looks like a tick-tack-toe grid on the top right of the screen. Find "My Account" in that drop down menu. Under the "Sign-in & Security" section click on "Signing in to Google." Then click "2-Step Verification." You'll have to use your current password to continue and you can turn it on and set it up how you want.
